Born in Q4-1922, [Newmarket 3b:686], the son of Bertram Robert and Ruby May WOOLLARD (née OLSEN) of Exning.
In the 1939 register, at 2 North End Cottages, Exning, wer ehis father Bertram R [13-5-1891] racehorse stud man; his mother Ruby May [4-10-1893] and sisters Dorothy E [7-1-1920] later Mrs KING, and Jean M [13-10-1926] later Mrs PENDLEBURY. There is one closed record. |

They had landed at Salerno in September 1943, when six battalions of the Queens West Surreys, 1/5th 1/6th 1/7th and 2/5th 2/6th 2/7th, formed the 131 Infantry
Brigade of 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats). 2nd December, as part of a co-ordinated 5th Army attack on Monte Camino, the whole Queen’s Brigade with 2/5th
Queen’s led the assault up the almost vertical, in places, face of the mountain. It took 4 days to clear the mountain and occupy the small, now ruined,
monastery at its summit. They had crossed the Garigliano river and taken Minturno at the time of Robert's death and were later to be used in the Monte Cassino
battle. The battalion lost 8 men that day, 5 rest with Robert in Minturno. They were buried initially at 12GR/JPW/2246 and re-interred in Minturno in December 1944. The Grave Registrations reports are not in the public domain as some of these records contain details considered to be disturbing for relatives. |
